Exterra Carbon Solutions raises CAD$20m Series A to accelerate mining industry integration into the circular economy

What does Exterra Carbon Solutions do?

Exterra Carbon Solutions is a cleantech company based in Montreal that transforms legacy mining waste into sustainable materials and CO2 sequestration solutions using proprietary technologies such as the LOW™ process for producing low‑carbon metal oxides and the ROC™ process for permanent CO2 mineralization.

How much did they raise?

The company closed a CAD$20m Series A financing round that was co-led by Clean Energy Ventures and BDC Capital, with additional participation from the Government of Quebec, Investissement Quebec, MOL Switch, and Kinetics, bringing its total raised investment to CAD$32m.

What are their plans for the money?

Exterra intends to use the funds to accelerate the integration of the mining industry into the circular economy. The investment will support the upcoming Hub I project in Quebec, scheduled to begin construction in 2027, which will process over 300,000 tonnes of asbestos mine tailings annually, destroy any remaining asbestos fibers, and rehabilitate mining sites. The company also plans to scale its technologies for larger international mining and mineral processing applications.

What have they achieved so far?

Exterra has successfully de-risked its proprietary technologies through pre-commercial pilot operations in Val-des-Sources, Quebec and has a clear roadmap for its commercialization strategy centered on the deployment of the Hub I project.
